Fellow TRL member Ana Rojas is making a splash this summer. After landing a prestigious opportunity with the Organization for Tropical Studies, OTS, Ana packed her bags and left for a six-week stay in Costa Rica. Each year, OTS admits a select group of graduate students to its esteemed tropical ecology field course in Costa Rica. Here, students like Ana are led by expert scientists and given the opportunity to conduct research at various OTS stations across Costa Rica. Students get to experience an array of habitats that you can find in the tropical Americas while performing individual projects and experiments that can get published in peer-reviewed literature. Students who have completed the course say, “it’s so intense and you do this process so many times that you lose the fear of failure, or of stupid ideas.” While the course has very demanding work, you are surrounded by groups of 20 or 30 people every day that are like-minded and love what they are doing.
Many students have commented that this course helps to shape students into scientists and can change one as a person. Ana, we are so proud of you and excited to hear about all your experiences this summer!
